Beating the Summer Blahs on a Budget

Image by miss grunzke via Flickr Right about now is the part of summer when my kids tell me how bored they are. Or at least they used to until we started looking far and wide for fun, inexpensive summer activities.
The first place we looked was at our local library. Many libraries have summer reading programs; our library also has programs for teens and adults so that everyone in the family gets to participate.
Our library also has a full schedule of special events such as magic shows, story hour with the symphony and game days. Best of all, these events are free.
The next place we looked for some kid-friendly summertime fun was at our local colleges and museums, both great resources for free and low-cost summer camps and other activities. We found a summer science/engineering camp sponsored by the NASA SEMAA program that has allowed our son to while away the summer days working with other kids to design their own Mars colony.
If you have a kid that is interested in science, make sure to check out the SEMAA website for tons of online information and activities for K-12 kids and their families. NASA offers a number of free camps, programs and activities for kids - check out the Kids' Club and the student page for more information.
For our sporty and active daughter, we check out what our Parks and Recreation department has to offer. We never fail to find a ton of fun outdoor activities – everything from arts and crafts to field trips, swimming, and sports lessons. We skip the elite (and expensive!) sports camps and look for programs and activities that are offered at little to no cost.
Another great place to look for summer activities for your kids is with neighborhood groups. Our local group is planning a free outdoor movie night at a local park. Also look for city-wide events such as free summer evening concerts.
Are your kids members of the Boys Club or Girls Inc.? These are great places to find summer outings and other activities, usually for one low yearly fee. Also be sure to check with your local 4H, YMCA, boy and girl scouts, church groups and other organized activities such as gaming clubs at local comic-book stores.
If your kids like arts and crafts, be sure to check for free make-and-take days at your local craft shop. One of our area craft stores is offering two to three make-and-take days every week during the summer.
Many movie theaters offer a summer movie package for kids that costs very little, and some even offer free movies for kids on weekdays. Give your local movie house a call and see what programs they offer.
Grab a camera, sketchbook or journal and help your kids start observing and recording the things all around them. In our hurried world it's easy to zoom through our days without stopping to smell the roses or admire the beauty of a lazy summer creek. Slow down and connect with your environment at a neighborhood park or a walk around the block, and let the kids record their thoughts or images.
While parks and playgrounds are a natural fit for kids, we’ve found many other free and low-cost summer activities that help keep our days (and wallets!) full.Take a look around your community, you may be surprised at all the programs they have to offer so that you and your kids can beat the summertime blahs.
What free or low-cost solutions have you found to keep your kids busy during the summer?
