Yes, this is a good post, but--I'm going to go defensive. I give in to the temptation of allowing screen time (and it's now most realistic to expand to this) to catch a break. Now, truthfully, perhaps I should never have allowed the existance of any screens at all. But on top of that, when my kids get bored, I either a) start scheduling paid-for activities; b) play with them; c) arrange a playdate; d) turn on the TV. (This list, of course, is not exhaustive.) Choice (a) is great, but costs money, and kids today get crazy overscheduled. We've already established (d) looks pretty bad. (c) is not always possible. Choice (b) sounds wonderful, but my brain cannot always handle more than 30 minutes of toddler/kid play without needing an adult break. I wonder if I started from a no-TV/screen time ever stance, AND was able to stand back and let them figure out what to do for 6 hours a day, if we would have less screen time overall. Either way, if my kids OD one day, then usually back off the next (sometimes with my pushing.)

Great post! My children are not aloud to sit around and watch TV or play video games all day. I think it also makes them lazy if they just sit around all day.

Well...on Facebook you can protect what is posted but what about mothers who write blogs and post pictures of her child, her partner,herself.. tell people in what city they live, where they might be found around town; post pics of the house they live in...they also, including her mother and sister, post information, with their real names on Twitter...tell people where they live approximately and their names/address are in the phone book? Anyone who wished to do them harm would not have much of task to find them; use their pics for other purposes etc. etc. Some people don't think.

Amanda O Rourke Hogan I am a firm believer in the concept of "We reap what we sow" you are clearly an extremely loving mother now,Ciaran feels safe & secure with you..he knows you are his rock,his foundation..the amount of time you invest in him will continue and he will not be concerned about your age,I am sure he will make friends over the years who have younger mothers,maybe older mothers,but your age is not an important factor in his levels of trust..the important thing is how you communicate together,your attitudes to life..mental age is what is important,as long as you show a healthy interest in his life, and the world around you,keep the channels of communication open,Ciaran will always be able to confide in you...that I am convinced of..

This all came up and was legal under the Prevention of Terrorism act? Isn't it amazing how much clout social networking has? If the father had not posted about his ordeal, the Facebook world would have never taken note and the shopping center would still have their signs up. This is one of those 'silliness' rules that went overboard. If the security guard had not enforced the shopping center's rule, he might have lost his job. If the police had not been called and arrived they would been deemed irresponsible and held accountable (especially if the man had been a pedophile or child kidnapper).

The world will probably keep adding more rules and laws to feel safe. When those rules and laws are ridiculous, we need to let them hear our voice. Very interesting posting, Claire!

For me, Motherhood is amazing, since, for such a long time, I didn't think I wanted to be a mother at all. I equated motherhood with being trapped, humiliated and poor. Then my body clock shocked me by kicking in at age 38 or so,and when I wanted to be a mother, I couldn't become one. I had given up hope, when aged 41, I became pregnant and had my little boy three months off my 42nd birthday! Motherhood means everything to me now! I don't mind sacrificing some parts of my life because I had such a long time to myself. And I make a huge effort not to lose my identity.

Thank goodness for parents who do their research!!...

Fortunately, we connected with a great paediatrician at the hospital.
When we discovered that our son had been born with abinism, this Dr. referred us to all the right directions for further assistance and education about this condition.
It is important to find a reliable professional, you are so correct!

That's funny...but so untrue :) My house is always untidy...but I do have a family and a life! I used to be a neat-nick and kept my house like a museum. Not any more. Now, I get to it when I can :)
