I give in to the temptation of allowing screen time (and it's now most realistic to expand to this) to catch a break. Now, truthfully, perhaps I should never have allowed the existance of any screens at all. But on top of that, when my kids get bored, I either a) start scheduling paid-for activities; b) play with them; c) arrange a playdate; d) turn on the TV. (This list, of course, is not exhaustive.) Choice (a) is great, but costs money, and kids today get crazy overscheduled. We've already established (d) looks pretty bad. (c) is not always possible. Choice (b) sounds wonderful, but my brain cannot always handle more than 30 minutes of toddler/kid play without needing an adult break. I wonder if I started from a no-TV/screen time ever stance, AND was able to stand back and let them figure out what to do for 6 hours a day, if we would have less screen time overall. Either way, if my kids OD one day, then usually back off the next (sometimes with my pushing.)D. My children are not aloud to sit around and watch TV or play video games all day.
